With 100 nights a year moving from Booking to your website, the website pays for itself.

Default values are an example. The range for each programme is what the sources below publish; your exact number is in your contract and the extranet.

The maths

The formula, in plain sight.

Nothing is hidden. The calculator runs these six lines, in this order. The order matters: the Genius discount lowers the price before commission is charged, and the Payments by Booking fee applies to what was actually charged.

  1. 1Nights soldrooms × days open × occupancy
  2. 2Sold through Booking (V)nights sold × rate × Booking share
  3. 3Genius discount (G)V × Genius bookings × discount
  4. 4Commission(V − G) × (base + Preferred Partner points)
  5. 5Payments by Booking(V − G) × processing fee
  6. 6Total a yearcommission + payments + G

What goes into it

Four layers, one on top of the other.

ItemHow it worksPublished range
Base commissionA percentage of each booking, set in your contract by country, area and type of property10% to 25%, most often around 15%
Preferred PartnerMore commission in exchange for a thumbs-up and better placement in resultsabout 3 points more
Payments by BookingBooking charges the guest for you and deducts a processing fee1.1% to 3.1% of what's charged
GeniusA discount for Booking's frequent customers, taken from your rate10% to 20% of the price

What it leaves out

The calculator falls short on purpose.

  • Any tax your country applies to the commission invoice.
  • Exchange-rate differences between getting paid and paying the invoice.
  • Non-refundable bookings that pay commission even if the guest doesn't come.
  • The cost of the channel manager or engine that syncs your calendars.
  • Deals and promotions you switch on besides Genius.

Your real numbers

Where to find each figure.

Your base commission and active programmes are in the Booking extranet, in the finance section, and in the contract you accepted when you listed.

If guests pay you at the property, Booking sends an invoice at the start of each month with the previous month's bookings and the commission on each one. Add up last season's invoices and you have the exact number, no estimating.

Booking's share comes from your spreadsheet or channel manager: Booking nights divided by total nights.

Now what

The number matters if it changes something.

Booking helps people who don't know you find you. The problem is when it fills the whole hotel. Your own website, fast, on Google and easy to book on, brings part of it back direct. We'll do a free diagnosis with your numbers.

Questions

How much commission does Booking.com charge?

It depends on your contract. Trade sources give a range of 10% to 25%, with 15% the most common figure. Programmes you switch on, such as Preferred Partner or Payments by Booking, come on top.

How much commission does Booking charge in Argentina or Chile?

There's no fixed rate per country: your contract sets it by area and type of property. The way it's calculated is the same everywhere, so this calculator works the same for a hotel in El Chaltén, Bariloche or Puerto Natales. Put in your real rate.

Is commission charged on the Genius-discounted price?

Yes. The Genius discount lowers what the guest pays and commission is calculated on that lower price. The discount is still yours to pay: it's money you don't collect.

What is the real rate?

Everything lost along the way (commission, fees and discounts) divided by what you'd have charged at full price. With programmes on, it usually sits several points above the base commission.

Do you store the numbers I enter?

No. The maths runs in your browser and isn't sent anywhere.

Should I leave Booking?

That's not what we suggest. We suggest Booking as a complement: it brings new people, and those who already know you, come back or search your name book direct with you.
