154 places to stay. AI names 26.
We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode where to stay in El Chaltén. Six questions each, logged out, on the same day. We counted which places they named and put them on the town map.
- places to stay on the town map
- 154
- answers from 3 AIs
- 18
- named at least once
- 26
- never came up
- 128
The concentration
Three places take one in three mentions.
Across 18 answers there were 83 mentions. They went to 32 places (26 in town, 6 outside), but not evenly: the top three add up to 28. More than half come up only once. The rest of the town never comes up.
Why it happens
AI can't recommend what it can't find.
- 01
First it searches
When you ask where to stay, the AI doesn't make up a list: it queries search engines and builds the answer from what it finds. Property websites, reviews, travel guides, articles.
- 02
Then it picks a few
The question asks for five and the answer gives five. With so little room, the winners are the places with the most pages about them online, and pages that are easy to read: name, location, what they offer, price, photos.
- 03
And it repeats
The three AIs read similar sources, which is why the top places repeat across all three. Whoever already shows up is more likely to keep showing up. A place without its own website that Google understands doesn't even make the shortlist.
The chain
If Google finds you, AI finds you.
- Your website
- AI
- The guest
Instagram doesn't break that chain: it shows your posts to people who already follow you and pushes what already works, but nobody searches there for "where to stay in El Chaltén". Search goes through Google and, more and more, through AIs that read what Google indexes. Your own website, fast and well built, is the way into both.
The idea
Every place with its own front door.
A town of 154 places to stay shouldn't depend on an outside intermediary, or an AI, deciding who gets shown. It isn't about fighting anyone. It's about every house, inn or cabin having its own place online, where a traveller can find it by name.
That's what we do from El Chaltén: fast websites of your own, with the data search engines and AIs read (location, type of property, prices, photos, reviews) and pages that answer what travellers ask before they book.
How we did it
The method, so anyone can repeat it.
| Date | 12 October 2026, all on the same day |
|---|---|
| AIs | ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode, logged out in a private window. Perplexity and Claude asked for an account and were left out |
| Questions | 6 per AI, one per new chat, copied word for word: 3 in Spanish and 3 in English |
| Count | Only places named in the text of the answer, not the loose cards shown alongside |
| Map | 154 places to stay in town according to OpenStreetMap: hotels, hostels, apartments, cabins, guest houses and campsites. 6 of those named are outside town and not on the map |
The six questions
- ¿Dónde me conviene dormir en El Chaltén? Recomendame 5 alojamientos.
- Busco un alojamiento lindo y no tan caro en El Chaltén para 3 noches. ¿Cuáles me recomendás?
- ¿Cuál es el mejor hotel de El Chaltén para una luna de miel?
- Where should I stay in El Chaltén? Give me your top 5.
- Best budget places to stay in El Chaltén for hikers?
- Luxury accommodation near Fitz Roy in El Chaltén — what do you recommend?
It's a one-day sample. Answers change with the date, the country and the account asking. A place not showing up says nothing about its quality: it says the AI didn't find it.
Your place
Does AI name you? We'll tell you for free.
We ask the same questions with your property in mind, look at how you show up on Google and send you a short report on what's missing. No commitment.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my hotel?
There's no switch. ChatGPT and the other AIs build answers from what they find online. What helps most is your own website that Google understands (name, location, type of property, prices, photos), a complete Google profile with reviews, and other pages talking about you.
Why don't you publish the names?
Because it isn't a quality ranking. AI naming a place says how much it's talked about online, not whether it's better or worse. If you want to know whether yours comes up, we'll tell you privately.
Is being on Booking enough for AI to name me?
On its own, hardly. On Booking you're in a list with everyone else, in the same format. What helps the AI take you into account is being talked about outside Booking too: on your own website, in guides and in reviews.
Will you repeat the study?
The plan is to repeat it to see how it changes, and take it to other towns in Patagonia.
