What it is
Booking Directo is a lodging search engine that started in October 2026 in El Chaltén and now covers seven destinations in Argentine and Chilean Patagonia. Travellers search on a map, see how long it takes to walk to the trails or the centre, open the listing and tap “Book”. That button takes them to the property's website and its own booking engine, with dates already filled in when the engine allows it.
It charges no commission to the property and no surcharge to the traveller, doesn't handle payment and asks for no account or card. Being listed is free. The only condition is technical: the property needs its own website, served securely, that works on a phone and loads in under 5 seconds.
What it found along the way
To decide who to show, the project surveyed 971 properties across seven destinations and measured their websites on a phone over simulated 4G. The result is uncomfortable: only one in four has an own website that can be found, and of the 176 sites measured, 43% take more than 4 seconds to show. Google considers up to 2.5 seconds good.
That explains something every hotelier sees on Google: when someone searches for a place to stay in their town, the platforms come first. Not only because they buy ads, but because many properties have no door of their own that can compete. The full survey, with method and sources, is published on the site.
| Destination | Properties | With own website | Median mobile load |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Chaltén | 146 | 30 | 2.6 s |
| El Calafate | 125 | 47 | 3.8 s |
| Ushuaia | 96 | 18 | 4.1 s |
| Puerto Natales | 134 | 30 | 4.4 s |
| Bariloche | 270 | 58 | 2.8 s |
| Villa La Angostura | 108 | 32 | 2.6 s |
| San Martín de los Andes | 92 | 19 | 8.1 s |
| Total | 971 | 234 (24%) | 3.2 s |
Where the idea comes from
It isn't new. In Nantes, France, a group of hoteliers launched Fairbooking in 2013, a movement for guests to book direct in exchange for a perk. Europe also has Fairbnb.coop, which shares its fee with local projects. Booking Directo takes the idea and changes the format: instead of a network of member hotels, it's a map-based search like the ones travellers already know, ending on each property's own site.
The timing helps. The European Union has barred Booking from imposing rate parity since November 2024, and in March 2026 Chile reached a settlement for it to stop requiring it. Where there's no parity, the direct website can beat the platform on price, and a search engine that shows that website makes sense.
What changes for a hotel
For a property with a good website, Booking Directo is one more channel sending travellers to its site at no cost. For one without a website, or with a slow one, it's a reminder with data: the project writes to those that fail the checks with what it measured, so they know what to fix.
The “Verified website” badge is given automatically to those that meet the four technical criteria. Another, “Recommended by Booking Directo”, is added by hand, only to properties the team knows. Listings aren't ranked by payment: there's no way to pay to appear higher.
Who makes it
Booking Directo is an independent project made in El Chaltén. It's developed by Andes Developers, the studio publishing this piece, and has no relation to Booking.com. We say so because it's part of what we keep writing about: hotels owning their bookings again.
