How to leave Booking.com Genius (and when it makes sense)

Genius brings bookings, but your price pays for them: the discount comes out of your rate and commission is charged anyway. Before leaving or staying, know how opting out works and do the maths.

What Genius is and what it costs you

Genius is Booking's programme for its frequent customers. If you join, you show them a discount, usually between 10% and 20% depending on their level, and in exchange your property gets more visibility with them.

The discount comes out of your price. And commission is calculated on what's left, so on every Genius booking you pay both.

How to leave

There's no button: you ask to opt out by message from the extranet. According to Booking's partner help, the path is the inbox, messages, contact options and a message saying you want to leave the programme.

Menu names change over time. If you can't find them, search “opt out of Genius” in the extranet help centre.

Leaving Genius, step by step (Booking extranet)
StepWhat to do
1Log in to the extranet and open the inbox
2Choose messages and “See contact options”
3Property details → Other → See all contact options → Message
4Write that you want to opt out of Genius and send

Before leaving: six months, and the pause

Once you leave, you can't rejoin for six months. If what you need is a break, say in high season, you can suspend Genius discounts for up to 30 days a year, not necessarily in a row, from the opportunities section.

When it makes sense

It depends on how many bookings it brings and what each one costs. If you fill up anyway in high season, paying a discount and commission on those nights is money going out. If in low season Genius brings guests who wouldn't come otherwise, it may be worth it.

Do the maths with your numbers: what share of your bookings is Genius, how big the discount is and what your commission is. Meanwhile, build the channel that depends on no programme: your website, where guests who already know you book direct.
